In Process: The Scrimshaw Collection

IN PROCESS: SCRIMSHAW COLLECTION
Hannah Blount Jewelry’s Scrimshaw collection is an ever-growing, oceanic ode to the scrimshanders of yore who created their hand-etched pieces to pass the time aboard their ships—often working with the current and movement of the vessel to create their designs. A labor of love and a contemporary take on a beloved art form, HBJ’s Scrimshaw collection combines the sentimentality of every HBJ piece with the endless inspiration the ocean provides. Each Scrimshaw piece serves as a symbol of protection, resistance, and nostalgia.
Bringing each Scrimshaw piece to life is an intricate and involved process that combines classic artistry with the grit and labor of the art form's originators. Below is a visual overview of the undertaking of this collection...
SCRIMSHAW STEPS 1 AND TWO

Step 5 - Deepening the shadows.
Step 6 - Creating a secret detail. Step 7 - Crafting the bezel setting.
Step 8 - Building out the bezel setting. Step 9 - The final piece.
