Design Inspiration | The Ruthie B. Collection

Jim Hanon, of Minus Red, recently filmed a beautiful, genuine view of a day-at-sea with my father on the Ruthie B.

The last Nantucket offshore fisherman from Minus Red.

My father's fishing vessel, which was named after my mother, has provided infinite inspiration in my work. Hanon, a family friend, heard my mother was going to join my father on an expedition, and he insisted on going in her stead. The footage shows the beautiful, gritty and lonely realities of my father's work, and the day-to-day life of those who journey offshore.

The changing hues of the sea throughout the day, the detailed shots of the boat's gear, and its varying silhouettes and metals, are shown throughout the film, and are all found within Ruthie B. pieces. The combination of the industrial grit and power of the vessel, with the ocean's natural beauty and the stoicism of the father encapsulate many of Ruthie B.'s themes.

Some of the beloved natural peculiarities of the sea that I aim to represent in Ruthie B. can be found in this nostalgic and sentimental video. I hope you enjoy this view into the inspiration behind one of my favorite collections.
