With this latest Vanity necklace, comprised of 70.21ct of star sapphire, we were inspired to break down the phenomena that makes star sapphires (among other gemstones) so beautiful and unique.
Star gemstones are called so becuase of asterism. This optical phenomena occurs in cabochon cut stones, creating the illusion of reflecting star effect from inclusions within the gemstone.
In star sapphires and rubies, asterism is caused by the presence of rutile. Rutile is a titanium oxide gemstone, often dark red or black in color. Rutile inclusions create different illusions, and in the case of the Cavatica Sapphire Vanity Necklace, they appear like a spider's web.
